Are you thinking about studying abroad, but aren’t sure whether it’s the right move for you? A study abroad course isn’t just about getting a top-quality education, it’s also your chance to experience a different culture and stand out from your fellow graduates when it comes to applying for a job.

A study abroad course offers you the chance to learn a new language, to develop skills outside the classroom that you wouldn’t in your home country, and to expand your view of the world.

Choosing to study for a degree abroad will also improve your job prospects. Employers will be impressed by the dedication, effort, and motivation it takes to gain a degree from a foreign country. It’s a great way to stand out from the crowd.

HOW CAN YOU STUDY ABROAD?

There are dozens of countries where you can choose to study for a degree abroad, so making your choice isn’t going to be easy.

Popular study abroad destinations include the USA, the UK, Canada, and Australia, but the right country for you will depend on your circumstances.

Is the course or the country more important to you? Have you thought about whether you’ll be able to get a study visa? Will you be able to afford tuition fees or get a scholarship? These are all questions you will have to answer before you start applying to study for a degree abroad.

TUITION FEES

One of the major issues you will have to solve before being accepted onto a study abroad course is how you will pay for tuition fees. Some countries offer courses that are completely free, such as those in Sweden and Norway (although these generally only apply to EU citizens), whereas others will charge tuition fees that run into the thousands of dollars.

The cost of your study will also depend on the degree you choose. Business courses and MBAs are often much more expensive than art and humanities degrees.

SCHOLARSHIP

Many universities will offer scholarships to international students. These can range from scholarships that cover living costs and tuition fees to small bursaries that can aid your studies. Check with your chosen university about what’s on offer and apply early.

IMMIGRATION AND VISAS

Most students will require a study visa to study a degree abroad. The cost, type and length of visa will depend entirely on your nationality and country you choose to study in.

You should factor in at least six months to obtain your student visa, so make sure your application is in well in advance of your course start date.

ACCOMMODATION

There are normally two main types of accommodation open to international students:

  1. University provided accommodation.
  2. Private accommodation.

Most international students will opt to live in university provided accommodation at first. This is normally a hall of residence style housing, where you will live in dormitories and share kitchens and living rooms with other students. This housing is normally on campus or near the university, and provides a great way of meeting fellow students and settling into university life.

Private accommodation may suit study abroad students with families better. It can often be hard to organise private housing until you are in your study abroad country, so ask your university for help with estate agents and negotiations if you decide to go down this route.
